Oakland County, Michigan is home to 1,202,174 residents, or a little more than 10 percent of Michigan’s population, as of the U.S. Census 2008 estimate. Its county seat is Pontiac known as the "Hub of Automation Alley." Although the “Motor City” of Detroit, Michigan is southeast in nearby Wayne County. Oakland County is considered to be part of the Detroit Metropolitan Area for demographic purposes. Oakland County is a mix of economic cultures, from blue collar inner suburban cities such as Hazel Park and Ferndale, to the wealthy cities of Birmingham, West Bloomfield, Bloomfield Hills, and Rochester, Michigan. The suburbs of the Detroit Metro area are notable for being the most affluent in the country. Oakland County is no exception as it ranks fourth wealthiest among counties in the U.S., with more than one million people. With Oakland’s economic base heavily laden with jobs in the automotive industry, they have fared far better than other cities like Flint, Dearborn, and Detroit due to a diverse economy that is less reliant on blue collar manufacturing jobs.

Well before the area that has become Oakland County, Michigan had any permanent settlers or development, many Native American tribes like the Chippewa, Ojibwa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi Indians traveled the Saginaw Trail and camped at Saginaw Plains. A number of Oakland County's main transportation arteries began as Native American trails. The Saginaw Trail has become Woodward Avenue; the Shiawassee Trail parallels the current Orchard Lake Road and the Grand River.

The geographic layout of Oakland County, most of Michigan, and a large portion of the territory won from the British west of the Appalachians in the Revolutionary War, was divided up according to Congressional planning in the 1780s. Various “ordinance” plans were adopted and discarded but one nuance stayed: the concept of parcels of land called townships with a uniform area of 36 square miles each. This gives each Michigan county an almost square outline. Due to offsets created by waterways, Oakland County is surrounded squarely by Lapeer, Genesee, Macomb, Wayne, Washtenaw, and Livingston Counties. The 908 square miles of Oakland County, Michigan is almost 4 percent water, or approximately 35 square miles.

Because of the 35 square miles of waterways in Oakland County, a large recreational business is based on it. Billed as “Oceans of motion without the sand!” the county maintains a number of Splash & Swim Waterparks. Two of these parks, Red Oaks Waterpark and Waterford Oaks Waterpark are family fun complexes with water playgrounds, tubing rides, wave pools, and a triple winding water slide. Waterford Oaks even has a group raft ride. Oakland County government provides for an extensive network of parks with well maintained trails, campgrounds, and nature centers, and even dog friendly parks for its residents and visitors alike. Five beautifully landscaped and professionally managed golf courses are part of the county amenities.

The Oakland County Circuit Court is a division of the Michigan State Judiciary and serves as a trial court of general jurisdiction. Oakland County Circuit Court hears both civil and criminal cases. It also acts on appeals from the District Court, Probate Court and administrative agencies. The Family Division of the Circuit Court, was created by Public Act 388 of 1996, and has sole and exclusive jurisdiction on matters involving family law in Oakland County.

Oakland County's School System is spread out over 28 school districts and encompasses an additional 15 public school academies and nonpublic schools. The Oakland County Schools Technical Campuses provide outstanding technical education programs to high school students from Oakland County's 28 public school districts. These technical campuses are provided by Oakland County at no cost to the local districts. Students enrolled in one of the four campuses spend part of each school day at these campus locations and part in their home district high schools. This innovative approach to the vocational -technical school theme is to better prepare students for post-secondary instruction as well as the world of work through nine areas of instruction: Biotechnology and Environmental Science; Business, Management, Marketing, & Technology; Construction Technology; Culinary Arts/Hospitality; Engineering and Emerging Technologies; Health Sciences; Human Services/Cosmetology; Transportation Technology and Visual Imaging Technology.
