Troy, Michigan  is Michigan's 12th largest city and the 2nd largest city in Oakland County after Farmington Hills. Troy township recorded the first official land purchase in 1819. Two years later, what is now the north-central portion of the city saw its first settlement, called Troy Corners. Four years later the first house was built at Big Beaver Corners about the same time as Troy Corners opened its first public school. The city of Troy was incorporated in 1955 as a stopgap to other cities that were gathering parcels and encroaching on Troy’s potential landmass. Troy had a slow but steady growth until 1966, when Interstate 75 was completed to the city, fueling more rapid development.

Troy, Michigan handles its historical preservation in a unique way. In an area behind the old city hall building, which is a general purpose museum, resides the historic town square, Troy Museum & Historic Village. Ten original, completely restored structures were painstakingly moved intact from their original locations to the museum location. Each structure is original, and patrons may enter and observe how they functioned in the past and how they were decorated, as all buildings are full of artifacts from that period. From a log and mud structure used by the first settlers, there is also an 18th century schoolhouse and estate, a general store, a blacksmith's shop, and a church along with the pastor's home.

World class shopping and dining can be found in Troy and the list of the more prominent shopping locations is topped by the Somerset Collection Mall. Three layers of elegance, with valet parking and a full-service concierge offering an array of superior amenities creates a shopping experience you will not soon forget. A bit more down-to-earth shopping experience can be had at the Oakland Mall in Troy. With 150 shops and stores to visit, it is a staple for both the Troy resident and visitor.

Interstate 75 cuts through the middle of Troy from the northwest corner bordering Bloomfield Township, and continuing southward towards the southeast border of the city entering Madison Heights. This excellent accessibility is a leading factor in Troy's economic stability. The beaver is the symbol of Troy, and the city's main commercial thoroughfare, Big Beaver Road, is named for it. Part of Troy' s commemoration of the city's 50th anniversary ceramic beaver statues that were displayed at various locations in the city.

Troy is located in the 52nd District 4th Division of the Oakland County Circuit Court system. Within this city court, Troy has a Traffic Division of motor vehicle violations and citations, a Civil Division for money or damage claims, and landlord / tenant disputes, a Criminal Division for misdemeanor offenses, both traffic and non-traffic offenses, and a Probation Department. The Oakland County Circuit Court is a division of the Michigan State Judiciary and serves as a trial court of general jurisdiction. Oakland County Circuit Court hears both civil and criminal cases. It also acts on appeals from the District Court, Probate Court and administrative agencies. The Family Division of the Circuit Court has sole and exclusive jurisdiction on matters involving family law for the City of Troy in Oakland County.
