Big Foot Is Threat To Michigan Sportsmen

It seems Big Foot is posing a real-life danger to Michigan hunters.

Not the mythical beast, that is, but “Big Foot” brand tree stands.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has announced a voluntary recall of eight different models of hunting tree stands that are defective and can collapse without warning.

The products were manufactured by Rivers Edge Tree Stands Inc. of Cumberland, Wisconsin, and sold in sporting goods stores nationwide between March and September 2012. Intended for bow and rifle hunting, the stands are made of gray metal with black nylon straps. About 14,000 have been distributed.

$865,000 To Fund Safety Programs For Michigan Workers

Health and safety programs ranging from asbestos awareness to machine rescue operations will be presented at 19 different sites across Michigan in 2013.

The educational push is made possible through $865,000 in grants from the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration (MIOSHA).

The goal: safer Michigan workplaces and healthier, more productive workers. According to the grant announcement:

The 19 statewide projects will include a wide range of training activities and proficiency levels, and many will offer interactive computer-based training modules. 146 Auto-Deer Crashes Every Day in Michigan

On an average day in Michigan there will be 146 collisions between deer and motor vehicles – and autumn is the most dangerous time of the year. Many crashes go unreported, which means the actual total is likely even higher.

According to the Michigan State Police Criminal Justice Information Center:

  • The rate of accidents in 2010 was nearly 56,000 vehicle-deer crashes.
  • In 2011, there were over 53,000 vehicle deer incidents.
  • Eight people lost their lives, and nearly 1,500 injuries were sustained from these crashes.
  • Incidents go up in October and November.
