In an accident that happened last month, a minivan driven by Anneka Vels, 17 years old, slide off the road and crash into a large tree as she was attempting to drive herself and her brother Landon Vels to school. In what could be termed a miracle, there was only one injury in the massive car pileup that happened on Southbound U.S. 31 at White Lake Drive. Distracted driving is becoming one of the leading causes of motor vehicle accidents today. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 3,331 people lost their lives as the result of crashes caused by distracted drivers in 2011.
